School Food
Go here to read a great article on school lunches. With all the recent talk of healthcare, I'm starting to think that eating healthfully is one of the most fiscally responsible things we can do for our country. Local, sustainable, no pesticides, no synthetics, no imitations, etc. For more information, check out Michael Pollan's new book: Food Rules. To sum it up: if your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize it, don't consume it.

Yes. this is exactly my frame of mind for the past three years. Right when I moved to New York I became a psuedo-vegetarian and now I'm psuedo-vegan (hard to explain in comment format), but regardless I started really evaluating where my food comes from and what it's made of. New York can make it simultaneously difficult and simple to find locally grown, organic food. Trouble is, you have to be willing to pay. Which I can sometimes afford to do. I wish I could do CSA here because it's an incredible program, but surprisingly it's mostly pickup and not delivery. And who has a car here? Oh yeah, everyone and no one. New York is so weird. Also, the up front payment thing is hard for me. But I'm with you!
